Bob Dylan and George Harrison at Dylan's home in Bearsville,
near Woodstock in upstate New York.
In November 1968, during a period
when Harrison had begun to outgrow his role in the Beatles and Dylan had
stepped back from the pressures of fame to raise a family. The song is recognized as a statement of friendship between the two musicians, whose
meetings from 1964 onwards resulted in changes in musical direction for
both Dylan and the Beatles. The influence of Dylan on Harrison's
songwriting was evident in a number of his compositions for the band,
and music critics note the presence of the American singer on All Things Must Pass,
even though Dylan did not contribute to the recording. Harrison and
Dylan went on to enjoy further, occasional collaborations after writing
the composition, culminating in their recording together as members of the Traveling Wilburys in 1988–90.
